Professional Development Goals

Capstone Goals

By November of 2025, I will successfully implement 1:1 life skills interventions for adults with mental illness to improve occupational performance

 

  • Objective 1: I will complete semi-structured interviews to gain insight into occupational needs and client-centered goals.

  • Objective 2: I will develop and lead individual interventions in the queen city clubhouse and community locations tailored to client needs.

By December of 2025, I will disseminate my capstone project to my peers and faculty during the Xavier University Capstone Symposium

  • Objective 1: I will create a presentation and poster to share the results of my capstone

  • Objective 2: I will create a binder to leave with my capstone site to allow for the project to be continued or replicated.

Goal

By the time I graduate, I will have developed strong communication and leadership skills that enable me to effectively lead teams and collaborate with others in diverse clinical and community settings.

  • ​Objective 1: Actively seek opportunities during fieldwork to practice clear, concise, and respectful communication with clients, supervisors, and interdisciplinary team members, ensuring mutual understanding and collaboration. 

  • Objective 2: Regularly reflect on my communication and leadership styles, using feedback from fieldwork supervisors and capstone mentors to identify areas for improvement and refine my approach in future professional settings.

Career Goals

Within one year of graduating, I will obtain a full-time position in acute care.

  • Objective 1: Obtain a Level II fieldwork placement in an acute care setting to gain relevant experience in the fast-paced and high-intensity environment of acute care.

  • Objective 2: Apply to job postings in acute care settings (e.g., hospitals, LTACs) and secure a full-time Occupational Therapist position.

  • Objective 3: Demonstrate the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and manage a caseload of patients with acute medical conditions, building competence in patient assessment and treatment planning.

 

Within three years of graduating, I will become certified in Trauma-Informed Care (TIC).

  • Objective 1: Research and identify certification programs for Trauma-Informed Care and select one that aligns with my professional goals and interests.

  • Objective 2: Complete the TIC certification program and obtain official certification by the end of my first year in practice.

  • Objective 3: Apply trauma-informed principles in my practice by integrating them into assessments and treatment plans, particularly for individuals with complex trauma histories.

 

Within one year of graduating, I will become a fieldwork educator.

  • Objective 1: Complete at least one full year of practice in an acute care setting to gain expertise and competence in working with individuals in critical care and recovery stages.

  • Objective 2: Gain approval from my supervisor and facility to begin accepting Level I or Level II fieldwork students.

  • Objective 3: Reach out to Stacia to obtain a contract with Xavier to accept fieldwork students. â€‹

Within five years of graduating, I will become a capstone mentor for OTD students.

  • Objective 1: Gain a minimum of three years of professional experience in acute care or trauma-informed practice to ensure competence in supervising and mentoring students.

  • Objective 2: Reach out to the Doctoral Capstone Coordinators at local universities to register as a site mentor. 

  • Objective 3: Collaborate with my supervisor to identify potential capstone projects that align with the needs of the facility and the students, ensuring the projects will contribute to both student learning and organizational goals.

  • Objective 4: Complete any necessary training or workshops required to serve as a capstone mentor and ensure I am fully prepared to guide students through the capstone process.

OTD Program

I will graduate from Xavier's OTD program by Dec. 2025

  • Objective 1: Maintain passing grades 85% or higher in all classes

  • Objective 2: Foster positive relationships with my peers, professors, and fieldwork instructors.

I will complete a presentation about my capstone at an advisory board meeting of the Queen City Clubhouse 

  • Objective 1: Discuss goal to present at the clubhouse with director Natalie Centers

  • Objective 2: Create presentation/ handouts to provide to advisory board members

​
